May 2022: Camanchaca opens $30 million horse mackerel plant

May 26, 2022
The new plant in Coronel supplements Camanchaca's canned horse mackerel, fishmeal and fish oil production plants in the same area, in addition to a shrimp plant that its fishing division operates in the neighboring area of Tome.

The $30 million site capable of processing 650 metric tons of fish per day has 10 automatic processing lines and seven freezing tunnels.

Chilean seafood group Pesquera Camanchaca has opened its new $30 million (€28 million) plant in Coronel, central Chile. The facility will produce frozen horse mackerel.

The site, capable of processing 650 metric tons of fish per day, has 10 automatic processing lines and seven freezing tunnels.

Camanchaca plans to produce about 50,000 metric tons of frozen mackerel during the first year of operation at the plant, which was built in 12 months.

The company produced 30,000 metric tons in addition to 20,000 metric tons sourced from third parties in 2021.

“ With a global demand for seafood growing a lot around the world, this leaves us in a robust position to continue feeding from Biobio to markets in the world, such as Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Eastern Europe and Peru,” said Camanchaca CEO Ricardo Garcia Holtz.

The new plant in Coronel supplements Camanchaca’s canned horse mackerel, fishmeal and fish oil production plants in the same area, in addition to a shrimp plant that its fishing division operates in the neighboring area of Tome.

Last month, Camanchaca said plans to use a new office in the northern Spanish port city of Vigo to launch an expansion drive in European markets.
