Puerto Montt, July 2020: Cultivating trust during the pandemic, Álvaro Poblete, Regional Manager at Salmones Camanchaca

In these very complex times, companies need to listen, keep dialogue open and remain close to neighbors and the communities.

In recent months, it has become more evident that “being a company” means encouraging ongoing, responsible interaction with an open attitude toward the communities where it operates. In recent years, we have learned that part of our job is to cultivate ongoing contact with the community where we operate through concrete initiatives undertaken in conjunction with our neighbors and the surrounding communities. This involves not only communicating our achievements and the excellence we achieve at our operations, but building trust by disclosing our potential problems and impacts in a timely, transparent manner. Like any relationship, this trust involves all parties and cannot be built unilaterally. To build it, we need to get to know our interlocutors and proactively build ties—as companies and communities—answer questions, address needs and reach agreements that do not generate dependence.

Today, in the midst of the pandemic facing the country and given the particularities of each area of the Los Lagos and Aysén regions, Salmones Camanchaca has joined 70 salmon industry companies and SMEs in the Committed to the South campaign. Relationships, mutual support, coordination and collaboration are our best tools for facing situations like this. This public health crisis has become a social crisis with local and national economic and employment implications. Because our industry clearly understands the need to be present and support communities, we have joined to help however and wherever we are needed. We are especially grateful to our employees because they are what makes us part of the community. We also thank our suppliers, who are a fundamental part of our operations. We know that our clear, head-on actions to address the crisis will keep us in contact after this pandemic and we will continue learning together.
