December 2021: Beach cleanup arranged by Salmones Camanchaca collects almost 53 tons of waste from the Reñihue and Comau Fjords

January 5, 2022
The company has collected 7,500 kg of waste so far and has recycled 3,300 kg, of which ropes comprised 60%, hard plastic such as pipes and remains of buoys 27%, and expanded polystyrene 13%.

Salmones Camanchaca has arranged intensive beach cleaning in the Hualaihué and Chaitén communities in the Los Lagos Region. This initiative began in the second half of October 2021 and will continue until mid-December.

The initiative specifically aims to collect materials such as expanded polystyrene, ropes, buoys, plastics, household waste and other debris in the two key sectors of Reñihue Fjord and Comau Fjord. The former includes the Blanco River estuary, Caleta Gonzalo, Largo Fjord and Punta Chulao, which totals 22 kilometers. While the latter includes Porcelana, Letepu, Vodudahue, Punta Calle and Huinay, which totals 20 kilometers. This initiative is supported by local companies Green Fjords and Servicios Víctor Sánchez, respectively, and will use maxi-sacks donated by Skretting.

So far, 7,500 kg of waste has been removed and Salmones Camanchaca estimates that 45,000 kg remains to be collected. The company has managed to recycle 3,300 kg of the waste collected so far, of which ropes comprised 60%, hard plastic such as pipes and remains of buoys 27%, and expanded polystyrene 13%.

The company hopes to recycle most of the waste. It is collaborating with Recollect, a company in Puerto Montt that operates a recycling program “Atando Cabos” (Tying up loose ends) that has involved Salmones Camanchaca since 2018.

Collaborating with partners in the Los Lagos Region on this initiative is no coincidence as the company believes that this is essential, since this contributes to the generation of local value while contributing to waste collection.

The beach cleaning initiative arranged by Salmones Camanchaca is additional to the requirements of the Environmental Regulations for Aquaculture.
